This is a Hawaiian Monk Seal, also known as 'Ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua, Hawaiian for "dog that runs in rough water". It is an endangered species, with a population that is likely less than 1,500. They only live here in the Hawaiian Islands. This one was photographed about a week ago in Lahaina.
