PFEE (People For Educational Equality) – 501C(3) founded in 2009
Primary focus – Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project
No paid staff, 5 board members, all have been tutors.
All donations go toward tutoring program – Lee & Barb donate funds for operating expenses such as tax return preparation and fundraising costs.
We have donated over $100,000 to the tutoring program through biennial fundraisers and individual contributions.
Intention is to sustain & grow the program, which has been in operation for almost 17 years now, serving public school students in the primary, intermediate and high schools. Subjects taught include math, reading, social studies, ELL, etc. Each year there are around 90+ tutors and hundreds of students who participate in the program in Lahaina.
Tutor program costs include bus service for children, insurance, supplies, curriculum development and reproduction each year, record keeping, achievement awards for students, and recently added part time administrative staff. There is no regular source of funding for this program – it survives through fundraising efforts and a few benefactors who grant funds periodically.
Test scores overall show improvement of 86% and higher. Students who are invited into the program have struggled to achieve grade level test results. Many have parents who work 2-3 jobs, and some live in homes where English is not spoken.
This program is a huge help for the students and their families – not only academically, but socially and as an additional source of role models.
We are looking to further enrich the language arts & math program, bring in outside experts to provide STEM curriculum for more hands on activities in science, math, and social studies. Also we would provide scholarships for outstanding student math tutors for college and for kids summer camp for tutored students.
